Job Summary

To assist in the maintenance and operation of the animal experimentation/research facilities. Responsible for the performance of routine non-technical tasks.









Minimum Education and Experience

High school diploma or equivalent; must have effective communication and customer service skills.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities



  • Review, comprehend and comply with all Standard Operating Procedures (SOP's)and quality assurance standards pertaining to specific area.

  • Monitor daily animal health/welfare while performing daily animal health observations.

  • Perform animal husbandry duties to maintain quality/health of research animals includes daily bottle/cage checks; provide appropriate food/water; cage changing/cleaning.

  • Assist with restraint, handling and manipulation of various animal species as assigned by the on-site supervisor.

  • Dispose of animal carcasses following established procedures.

  • Observe & report problems involving animal care equipment and environmental support systems.

  • Maintain accurate departmental animal housing/support area record keeping.

  • Record animal health concerns per SOP and/or specified protocols.

  • Receive, inspect and put away received incoming animals; ensure and provide for sentinel animals in each rodent housing area.

  • Operate equipment and use supplies according to safety guidelines.

  • Sanitize facilities, animal housing units, and ancillary animal care equipment.

  • Perform general housekeeping and adhere to safety procedures.

    Additional Information

    The training schedule for the Animal Technician is M-F, 8am-5pm. Once adequate
    training is accomplished (a few weeks depending on experience) new technicians
    are required to work the weekends and take 2 days off during the week.

    Physical Demands and Working Conditions
    Lifting and reaching above the head, and being able to lift a maximum of 40lbs.
